Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agent workspace. You give Claude a folder of your real files and a standing instruction, and it works through multi-step jobs in the background instead of answering one message at a time. It runs in the Claude desktop app on Windows and macOS, it is included with paid Claude plans rather than sold separately, and it is aimed at document, spreadsheet and admin work rather than at writing software. Out of the box it is an empty desk.

How do you use Claude Cowork?
You point it at a folder, describe the job in plain language, and leave it to work. The loop is: give it a place to read from and write to, tell it what “done” looks like, run it once by hand, then put it on a schedule once the output is right. The practical difference from the chat app is the standing instruction — you are not asking a question, you are handing over a recurring job.
The setups that work start with one repeating task, not a tour of the features. Pick something you do every week that produces a file someone reads: a client status summary, a reconciliation check, a first-draft proposal from a template. The ones that fail usually started with a vague instruction and access to everything, which produces confident output nobody trusts enough to use.
Does Claude Cowork run on Windows?
Yes. Cowork runs on Windows and macOS through the Claude desktop app, and the feature set is the same on both. Nothing about it is Mac-only.
Almost all the Windows friction we see is the file layer rather than the app. OneDrive and SharePoint folders set to files on-demand look present but are placeholders until something opens them, which makes a run appear to skip files it simply could not read yet. Set the working folder to always keep on this device before the first run and most of that disappears. Deep folder nesting and long paths are the other recurring one, and the fix is a shorter working folder near the drive root rather than anything clever.
What plugins does Claude Cowork support?
A plugin bundles skills, connectors and tools for one job, so Cowork arrives at a task already knowing your format and your rules rather than being told each time. There is a growing public set covering the common ground — document production, spreadsheet work, research and summarising, email and calendar, and connections into accounting and CRM tools.
In practice most businesses end up with one or two built for their own workflow rather than relying only on public ones, because the value is in the parts specific to you: your invoice wording, your file-naming convention, the four checks a report has to pass before anyone sends it. That is buildable without an engineer, and it is the part worth spending time on.
How much does Claude Cowork cost in Australia?
Cowork is not sold separately, so the cost is the Claude plan cost. That is about A$28 a month for Pro, and about A$28 to A$35 per seat per month for Team, converted at the rate on 25 August 2026. Anthropic bills in US dollars, so the AUD figure moves with the exchange rate and most Australian cards add an international transaction fee on top.

Is Claude Cowork any good?
We run Automata AI on it — content pipeline, filing, CRM upkeep, reporting — so this is a judgment from use rather than from a demo. It is genuinely good at bounded, repeating work over files you already have: pulling a weekly summary out of a folder, producing a first draft against a template, keeping records tidy. Handed that kind of job it removes real hours, and it is the first tool we have used where the automation survives contact with a normal week.
It is weaker where the work needs judgment it cannot check. It will produce a confident, wrong answer rather than stop, so anything customer-facing needs a person between the draft and the send button. A scheduled task that fails can fail quietly unless you set it up to be visible. And there is no Australian data residency for Cowork today, which rules it out for some regulated workloads regardless of how well it performs. Worth it for most small businesses doing document-heavy work; not worth it if you were hoping to hand over the thinking.
