Claude Cowork Background Tasks: Work That Runs While You Sleep

Most AI tools need you sitting at the keyboard. You ask, it answers, the session ends when you close the tab. Claude Cowork's scheduled and background tasks work differently. You set up a job once, it runs on its own timetable, overnight, first thing in the morning, every Monday, and the output is waiting for you rather than something you have to remember to ask for.

What actually runs in the background

A background task is a Cowork session that starts on a trigger you define: a time of day, a day of the week, or an event like a new row appearing in a connected spreadsheet, rather than a message you type. It has the same connector access as a live session (email, calendar, CRM, file storage), so it can do real work. It can pull yesterday's sales figures into a summary, chase three overdue invoices, or draft the week's social posts from what actually shipped.

What to run overnight versus what to keep live

List every report or check someone on your team does manually before 9am. Time how long each one actually takes over a week, not how long you assume it takes. Most owners are surprised by the total, and it's usually higher than the three-task example above once every small daily habit is counted.

What this isn't

Background tasks aren't a way to avoid setting up proper approval gates. Anything that could embarrass you or cost money if it goes out wrong should still queue for a human, no matter what time it runs. Treat the overnight window as thinking time, not sending time, unless you've deliberately decided otherwise for a specific low-risk task.
